Hello! I'm interested in jester combat, and yes I've already been warned about it so let's just skip the bit where I'm told to play any other class. I just have questions about how juggling works. From what I can tell, juggling is going to be my main issue, namely envenoming my weapons right because adding them one by one to my juggled items list is slow. Am I absolutely going to need a script for doing this? Or is there some way I could successfully be envenoming my weapons correctly without needing to store the ID of each axe, then make something that checks which 3 are next in my inventory, and making sure it envenoms them all correctly? Because I have no idea how to do scripts like that.

I'm a returning player, so if you need to use combat terminology I'll understand.

So today I changed my class to Jester. I was drawn to it because of how it's said to be a class that requires a lot of creativity. I enjoy experimenting and testing out things, so I decided Jester was the way to go. Anyway, I have a couple of questions.

- How good is an unartied jester? I don't have money to spend on artefacts, so its highly unlikely I'll get any. Also, I want to get involved in competitive PvP, so would this be easy to achieve without spending $$$?

- How should I distribute my lessons? I am already converting the credits I gain from levelling up into lessons. Right now I have Chariot in Tarot and Juggling in Pranks. I want to have some lessons to spend on Puppetry as well because its a very intriguing skill.

- Would it be plausible for Jester to play a more offensive role in group combat? While we have a big arsenal of supportive abilities, are stuff like Death tarot/Jack in the box recommended to be used in group combat?

- As an unartied player unlikely to get tri trans, what would be the best kill strategy to go for in 1v1s?

- What stats are most important for a Jester? I currently play a Rajamala Enforcer, and the extra Constitution helps bashing a lot, but as I said I'm more interested in PK and raids and stuff.

- What Tarot abilities should I be using more often? Those cards are limited so I'd rather invest more on the more important cards.

- If I ever get credits for winning a competition or something, what artefact should I buy?

- Can someone show me a list of defenses I should have up as a Jester? Is it good to have acrobatics/juggling etc in exchange for the mana/endurance drains?

Thanks for your help!

Hello, everyone. First time Jester here. I've been trying to get started on building my aliases and keybindings to get started on combat learning and I have a few Jester-specific concepts I am having trouble addressing.

1) How does one handle puppet swapping for group combat? I'm not sure if I should create a table to handle all the puppet numbers and their owners and then just have every reflex check wielded puppet, then swap to the targets, then use whatever ability.. What have you found works best?

2) How do you handle your forced commands? Do you have a preferar alias and then hierophant, then a combo alias that orders then follows with whatevet, or do you have aliases specifically just to order? It seems it would be easier to do combos, but I know versatility is important for Jester.

3) I want to avoid to being the annoying enemy that flies/runs/shields until my slow prep (puppet fashions) is complete. How do you minimize your time fashioning to keep combat enjoyable but still remain competitive?

4) What are some beginner concepts for me get down and what techniques should I avoid until I'm more experienced?

I'm going to attempt to do this on my phone. Wish me luck.

So I am going to assume that Jester combat is very linear, or only has three real options to kill. Now I could be totally wrong, I've never faced a Jester 1v1 and only seen logs. I've seen slowlock/JitB, Some aeon/mangle/death, and some troll illusions for a free kill with JitB. Could anyone expand on the necessities of Jester combat or being a good Jester? Artefacts essential, maybe an ideal icon, proper traits and specialization? Or is Jester a lot better suited to group combat? Is there anyway a Jester can lock someone or hinder them or trick a system into thinking they're locked?

Anything from old Jester players to personal experience against them is welcome!

Jester has long been disliked for its style of combat. It's a prep class, but it's also the best hindering and best escaping class. People often say that it's no fun to fight a jester because of either hangedman/fashion or run/fashion tactics. I have often heard people try to suggest fixes to the class by recommending the removal of some of their ability to hinder (hangedman) or run (somersault). But I think the spirit of what a jester is should have both elements of hinder and escape. Therefore, what should change is actually that they are a prep class. I believe jester should be a momentum class, and I have come up with an idea to combine Puppetry with Tarot to do just that.

Puppetry will lose all its current abilities. It's abilities will now depend on tarot cards that are attached to the puppet. There are 6 tiers. At each tier, the jester reads the fortune of his target. This is accomplished by holding a tarot deck in front of his target and telling them to choose a card. The card is then revealed and attached to the puppet, instilling it with new powers. Only one card from each tier can be attached to a puppet at a time. The only way to remove a card is to let the fashions fade so that the tier requirement is no longer met and then refashioning to try for a new card. I would also like to emphasize that fashions decay on a 1 to 1 basis for every second that the jester is not actively fashioning. This means that a jester should only run when necessary, and will not be able to do so without losing progress made on his puppet.

The timing to move from zero to tier 6 I will leave up to the experts, but for now I suggest each fashion always act as a truefashion and provide 2 fashions, and each second spent not fashioning decay 1 fashion. I tentatively recommend that it take 4 fashions to move from zero to tier 1 and 4 more for each tier beyond that. At current fashion speed of 1.6-1.7 with nimble it would take about 3.3 seconds to move from tier to tier and about 20 seconds to get to tier 6 unhindered.

Tier 1 Fool, Priestess, Magician, Emperor

Tier 2 Lovers, Empress, Hermit

Tier 3 Tower, Hangedman, Hierophant

Tier 4 Justice, Creator, Wheel

Tier 5 Lust, Aeon, Star

Tier 6 Death, Moon, Devil

The idea behind this theme is to create the effect that somehow the draw of the cards is unraveling the target's fate. To reinforce this, 2 cards provide a benefit to the jester's opponent, 1 punishes the jester for running, 1 takes fashions from the puppet, and 1 has a chance to either give or take fashions from the puppet.

Tier 1 (4 fashions) 2 balances

Fool - Creates a passive single affliction transfer from the jester to the puppet's target. Approximately once every ten seconds or so.

Priestess - Provides the puppet's target with health regen. (Yes, this is intended)

Magician - Provides the puppet's target with mana regen. (Yes)

Emperor - Gives functionality identical to puppet command.

Tier 2 (8 fashions) 4 balances

Lovers - Damage dealt to jester by target is reduced from all sources. (No more than algiz would provide).

Empress - Can travel to puppet's target within local area.

Hermit - Jester takes damage if he uses hermit or universe to escape in the presence of the puppet's target. (Fate is cruel)

Tier 3 (12 fashions) 6 balances

Tower - Rubble automatically generates in any room where the puppet is in the same room as its target. (Not when they are apart)

Hangedman - Flinging hangedman now becomes a noose, dealing asphyxiation damage over time until target writhes free.

Hierophant - Puppet loses some fashions.

Tier 4 (16 fashions) 8 balances

Justice - Reflects some damage done to jester by puppet's target.

Creator - Bomb's can be attached to puppet. (Effectively removing the ability for the target to avoid them)

Wheel - 50/50 chance to lose fashions or to gain fashions.

Tier 5 (20 fashions) 10 balances

Lust - Can empress target within local area.

Aeon - Flinging aeon will hit twice.

Star - Flinging star will cause 3 meteors to come down on the target in a row. (As if three stars were flung)

Tier 6 (24 fashions) 12 balances

Death - Flinging death will cause puppet's target to lose 10% of max health every second until they leave the room. (Jester is free to attack after flinging death)

Moon - Flinging moon gives all 6 moon afflictions at once for ten seconds. (stupidity, masochism, hallucinations, hypersomnia, confusion, epilepsy)

Devil - Flinging devil causes a devil to hand one of a concussion, web, or dust bomb to your puppet's target every time you do for ten seconds.

Buffer (30 fashions) 15 balances

I'd like to mention that none of the original functionality of tarot cards is intended to be changed by any of this. For instance, death tarot can still be rubbed on a person to go for an instant kill, it only changes when it has been attached to a puppet.

Unless otherwise stated, all abilities are lost when the fashions on the puppet fall below the minimum tier level. So for instance, one might say its not fair to have incurable justice. However, jester is not a damage heavy class as it is. The addition of more effective justice, hangedman that turns into noose, triple star flings, and death draining health, are meant to give jester a damage option. Also, if you hinder him, run, make him run, or otherwise remove his ability to fashion consecutively, he will lose the justice on his puppet and will have to refashion, with only 1/3 chance of getting it again.

The 3 tier 6 options are meant to be strong, but not enough to win a fight on their own. They provide a jester a huge advantage while they have it, but if they don't capitalize on it, they can lose their fashions and have to start over. Death is a damage option. Moon can help stick impatience for a lock or to add hinderance for an instant kill. Devil obviously provides fast hinderance.

So it is possible for a jester to fashion and get a less than ideal set up. But that's what makes it interesting I think. That you have some idea which cards you will get because of the tiers, yet there is still some chance left to it. I really hope, even if I'm sure there are many adjustments that would have to be made, that this can be a starting point for a better direction for jester to go in.

After a bit of research, like only a little bit, I found that Bop gets more damage as you spend more lessons in Pranks..... I think. I'm not entirely sure. Like, at all, heh. Does STR. come into play with Bop, ornah? And does the efficiency with Tarot cards, like High Priestess, depend on Int., or is it possibly like Bop, where the higher the skill, the better it is?

So, if it does depend on skill level, then would Dex. have anything to do with like, the flips and stuff of that nature? If not, then I would go with a Con. max if stats don't come into TOO much with Jesters like an Int. maxed Magi or Str. maxed Monk.

Edit: By efficieny with Tarot cards, I mean like the High Priestess heals you more or Magician gives more mana.

So, jesters have the instakill jack-in-the-box, which actually does take some time to wind and all, giving people the chance to easily just hit jesters with something and run off until it is done. Now, I would think that Jesters use some sort of paralysis/binding thing to keep them in the room.

1: With Tarot, you have the Hangedman card to wrap people in bindings. Is it possible to only have to get the hangedman off on an opponent and have enough time to wind the box? Or will they mostly get out in time?

2: If you have Puppetry, is it possible to fashion a puppet enough to use Binding in the middle of possibly a skirmish/raid or even 1v1? And with Binding, same question with Hangedman, will it last long enough?

3: If either don't last long enough, can you use both to increase the time?

4: Are there any other strategies to keep people hindered or something as to be able to use Jack, or it just timing with the card and/or puppetry?

That is the only instakill I do know about, do please give info on others if you can, thankee!!

Edit: I did just now found out about the Death card. Same questions as with the box, so I don't have to make this any bigger post.

Something I thought of a long while back and never brought up was altering Hocuspocus to use a channel name instead of a colour number, since people change their channel colours and figure out your pranks and stuff.
Something like: HOCUSPOCUS 5 CHANNEL TELLS <text>. So it would send via the tell channel instead of the colour. Could be a coding headache I guess but it would be neat.

So, I've been doing some extensive testing, and it seems that no matter what I try to do, I need upwards of 70 fashions to -really- kill most people. I need to write a tracker to keep track of true fashion proc I think (though I'm sure @Sena already has some reliable numbers) to properly check it out. Right now it seems to be around maybe 15% or so, and even then I've gone entire fights without a single truefashion proc.

My typical means of hindering for fashions involves just binding and getting one, MAYBE two fashions if I'm lucky on the writhe. If I can get a truefashion or two, I'm ahead in fashions, otherwise at best, I'm a single fashion ahead. We all know hangedman are only useful really in group combat since most the time your target will writhe out before you get balance back, and SVO/Omni have made dry aeon to slow people down a joke. Bombs aren't very useful either, as most people reflexively will put them into their bags, or drop them to hinder both of you.

So that brings me to the question, are there any more fashion effective methods of hindering out there?

So I heard a rumor that Jesters might be losing Tarot eventually. My first thought was "that's preposterous".
But then I realized the most used skills were Hangedman and Aeon, followed by survivability like Hermit, Uni, and Priestess. Hangedman and Aeon can be replaced by Puppetry, conceivably (bind, slow).

So skipping the other necessary cards, I toyed with the idea of splitting Pranks into two skills: Pranks and Props. You would just have to add more stuff to each skill to compensate.
-----

PRANKS

These are the abilities available in this skill

-----------------------------------------------

Handspring Leap at your foes in neighboring rooms.

Slipperiness Slip out of that which would bind you.

Bop Deliver a vicious blow with a blackjack.

Backflip Flip over obstructions.

Hocuspocus Cast coloured illusions to dazzle those about you.
Backhandspring Leap out of the room striking someone on the way out.

Balancing Maintain superior balance.

Juggling The ancient art of juggling.

Acrobatics Masterful footwork to make yourself a difficult target.

Badjoke Strip defences with your terrible jokes alone.

Graffiti Scrawl messages on walls.

Somersault Quickly somersault past obstructions.

Arrowcatch Pluck arrows from the air.

Suicidemice Brainwash mice to carry bombs on their backs.
Jack-in-the-Box An innocent musical toy with a vicious bite!
Jack-in-the-Box2 An innocent musical toy with a vicious bite!

PROPS

These are the abilities available in this skill

-----------------------------------------------

Props Wish for the props that every good jester needs.

Balloons Take to the skies with balloons.
Giraffes Twist a balloon into a giraffe.

Runaway Make a swift retreat.

Concussionbomb Momentarily stun everyone in the room.

Butterflybomb Blast people from the skies and trees.

Balloonhandoff Launch your foes to the clouds with a balloon.
Smokebomb Choke all in the room with a plume of smoke.
Webbomb Explode strands of webbing to bind everyone in the room.

Mickey Slip someone a mickey.

Traps The ability to search for traps in your location.
Disarm Attempt to disarm a trap.

Bananas Litter the floor with banana peels.

Firecracker Construct festive firecrackers.

Itchpowder Employ the irritating itchpowder.

Dustbomb Numb the sense of your victims with a bomb.
Timers Give your bombs a delayed effect.
Mousetrap Painful nuisances for your foes.
Glue Stick it to the man.
Mirrors Glance around corners. (MIRROR GLANCE <dir> <dir2>)

-----
The class seems to come out a little prop-heavy. But I also had a casual idea to spin-off JITB, where you change the prize at the end without them knowing. Starts the same way, with a winding box, but could finish with an explosion of darts or snakes or bees that give full lock affs: paralysis, asthma, anorexia, slickness, impatience, weariness, and voyria. Essentially still an instant kill but more indirect, gives the jester time to play with his food.

Also if balloonhandoff/butterflybomb ever becomes a combo again, glue could be used to prevent them dropping the balloon. But the recent balloon nerf went a step in the other direction on that one.

My alt is a Jester that I wouldn't mind getting into a bit of combat.

I have a few questions regarding which abilities do what, (a lot of the descriptions are vague/I misunderstand due to my lack of combat experience), and also questions regarding the required lessons/what to spend them on.

I'd prefer not to have to tri-trans, simply because if I put money into a character I'd rather it be my main. But if needed it's not a big deal.

If it's not required, I'd have about maybe 3600 or so total lessons to throw around? (This is just for the first couple of months while I figure the class out, then I'll actually start to invest).

I've read pretty much every single thread ever made about Jester combat, but there are still a few things I don't exactly understand.

- How can Hierophant be made useful, seeing as it has some limitations that prevent it from being cheap as all Hell? (I read about an INR tactic, but with serverside curing I'm not sure that's really useful to me). What kinds of things do people actually do with this?

- This may sound stupid, but I have absolutely no idea what a "fashion" is. People say things like, "oh yeah I had 20 fashions at that point", but I don't know what it's supposed to mean.

- How exactly does Death Tarot work, and how much balance/EQ does it take up per rub? Am I supposed to start fights off by rubbing it seven times? Then afterwards it seems like it takes a while to work... So am I supposed to have someone with two broken limbs, therefore they can't move? That just seems like I should use JitB, so I'm guessing that's not how it works.

- What does Aeon do? I literally have no idea. Also, what does Devil do? It says "it can only be used once", but I can't imagine that's a "you use it once on your character and never again". The six random cards it throws, is it at your target or something like that? Is tower useful in 1v1? Justice, Star, and Moon are also pretty vague.

- Is Mickey used in 1v1, or mainly groups? The EQ/Balance seems like it might be redundant to use it alone?

- Are illusions at all useful now, or should I just avoid practicing them?

- Jack in the Box: The goal is to keep someone in the room until the Jack in the Box goes off then? So things like Hangedman?

Regarding lessons: Where should lessons actually be? If it's tri-trans, then an answer isn't too necessary (unless there's a different skill I'll also need not including survival/vision)... But if double-transing is operable, what should I be doing?

Also, any arties required here? I'd probably also grab those once I like the combat more (or dislike and stop with it).

Thank you, I'll be on this all day.
